Even though we live fairly close to the city, I have always felt safe in our neighborhood. I walk home from the subway (3 blocks) when it's dark, and it's fine. But recently I'm starting to question things....
Last week, I was coming home from work and I passed a guy on the sidewalk anout 1/2 block from our apartment. I walked onto our porch and unlocked the door into our building. When I started to open the door, I felt someone behind me. I turned around and that creepy guy was on the porch, standing RIGHT behind me. He was icky and ugly and had an unlit cigarette hanging on his bottom lip. He had actually followed me home and I didn't even hear him walking behind me!! I said "can I help you?" He shook his head no. So I said "are you hear to visit someone who lives in the building?" Again, he shook his head no. So I ran into the building and slammed the door shut and locked it. I was so thankful that I was safe (insert nervous laughter).
Then the door knob starts jiggling. What the heck? I ran up to our apartment on the third floor and Nate was home. I was explaining the story when the door bell rang, over and over. I realized that my best friend Anne was at home with her two kids on the first floor. I didn't want him ringing her doorbell, so I ran down stairs to tell her not to open the door. Meanwhile, Nate went out on our third floor balcany to check out this guy who is also knocking on the door at this point. Here is the conversation, minus the F-bombs thrown out by the guy.
Nate: Hey! What do you want?
Hobo: I need to talk to her
Nate: No, you don't
Hobo: Yes, I do. It's none of your business.
Nate: It is my business, that's my wife.
Hobo: That's not your wife. I want to talk to her.
Nate: Leave our property or I'm calling the police.
Hobo: I'm going to go get the police and bring them back here with me.
Nate: Ok, whatever. Just get off our porch.
The guy left, a little tipsy. He seemed drunk. We didn't see him again. I am very vigilent now, when I'm walking. I don't wear my ipod, so I can hear everything, etc. So, all is well.
Well, actually: this week Nate went out mid-day to go to school, and the bomb squad and multible police cars and fire engines were on our street. There was actually a guy in a bomb suite going into a building. I thought that was just on the movies. We watched the news, but no mention of anything. Awesome! I was always so confused why our rent was so cheap here. hmmm.

I'd tell ya'll to go by a hand-gun but you live in Boston, I don't know if they're even legal there lol. But in all seriousness Mel, if you're going to be out walking alone you oughta look at pepper spray or taser or something. If you're interested Brian Nelson sells tasers through his website www.firearmspro.com/
Oh my gosh! You didn't tell me this! How freaky is that?! I'm so glad you locked the door!!!
